Tell us a little about yourself

I was born in Melbourne, Australia but have spent the majority of my life growing up in Overland Park, KS. I became interested in dentistry at a very young age. Over the years, it has been extremely rewarding to see dentists instill confidence into their patients. I am majoring in Chemistry and Psychology at UMKC and am involved with Alpha Delta Pi, Pre- Dental Society, and the Honors College. I am excited to start studying a profession where I can form caring relationships with patients, as well as impact communities where the need for dental care is high.

What compelled you to volunteer for SCL?

I have volunteered around the Kansas City area, but I had never volunteered long- term for a health- related organization. SCL presented a community outreach program to UMKC’s Pre- Dental Society, and I immediately became interested in the organization’s passion to help children obtain braces. The volunteer opportunities offer a positive impact on the lives of children all across the nation. Being a part of a wide scale initiative to improve oral health care is truly fulfilling.

What do you like to do for fun when you’re not in school, working or volunteering?

I have done Indian classical dance, Bharatanatyam for the past twelve years. I graduated from this art form in July 2014; however, I still perform at different venues across the Kansas City area. Recently, I have been taking yoga classes. If I am not dancing or taking yoga classes, I am probably trying out a new restaurant or catching up on the latest mystery novel.

What would you say to someone thinking of volunteering for SCL?

I highly recommend volunteering for SCL! First off, the staff at SCL is so genuine and welcoming. The SCL national administration office is located in the heart of Kansas City, at Crown Center, so it is nice to get a feel for the city. Volunteer projects vary, and it is exciting to be a part of the bigger picture. Volunteering at SCL will enhance your communication and professionalism skills which are both vital for dental school and beyond. SCL, and similar organizations, have made me so excited to become a dentist and to give back to communities in the future!

We thank Namana for her many hours of service supporting SCL in bracing kids for a better future!
